A Prayer for Newtown, Connecticut

A Prayer in the Aftermath of the Shootings in Newtown, Connecticut

"The People who walked in darkness have seen a great light;
   Those who lived in a land of deep darkness,
On them the light has shined."

Dear God of all creation,
   Our hearts are broken, yes shattered, by the horrifying events that took place at the
Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The scope of the tragedy, the horror of the act, the depth of the evil
are beyond our comprehension.
   We are reminded once more of how desperately we need a Savior,
   how fallen is our world,
   how much work there is yet to be done by God's people,
   how great your final coming will be when
   You "will wipe every tear from their eyes, death will be no more;
      mourning and crying and pain will be no more,
      and the former things will have passed away."
Dear God, be with the grieving families, the shattered community, and frightened children and families everywhere.
   Be with those immersed in the care and response to the tragedy- school teachers, administrators and staff,
   police and medical professionals, the press and politicians, clergy and counselors.
   Be with those whose faith is shattered or shaken, whose hearts are tormented by fear or anger, whose minds are filled with suspicion.
   Be with us as a nation that we would be brought to our knees, yes, to the manger and the cross.
   Be with the church everywhere that we would be a "light to the nations",
      reflecting the light of grace and compassion in Jesus Christ.
May the angels' message resound even more this season:
       "Peace on earth, good will to all..."
And "may your kingdom come, your will be done,
   on earth, as it is in heaven."
Amen and amen.
