“For the beauty of the earth,
For the glory of the skies;
For the love which from our birth,
Over and around us lies;
Lord of all to Thee we raise,
This our hymn of grateful praise.”*
We praise you, oh Lord, for the beauty of the earth, its grandeur and intricacy, its elegance and bounty,
For the fields and forests, the flowers and trees, the rivers and hills.
We praise you, oh Lord, the One who made it all and cares for your creation even now.
Now Lord, we come to you in this time of need when something called “the perfect storm” is heading our way.
We do not know what it all means for those in its broad path, nor what the destruction will be or how bad it will be.
But we do know that winds and rain -and even snow- will come, that lives will be in danger, that needs will emerge out of the rubble.
So we pray for your merciful protection on all in its path, especially the most vulnerable: the poor and the hungry, the very old and the very young,
The ill and disabled, the very exposed. We pray for those near us and in our nation, and for those on islands exposed to the winds and the water,
And for those in countries with few resources for protection or recovery.
As we pray with deep concern and an awareness of creation’s power, we pray also with confidence. For we know that the one thing mightier than “the perfect storm”
…is your perfect love.
Lord of all to you we raise this our prayer of grateful praise.
